Population growth has stalled

The island grew steadily to 2018, then added only 60 people by the 2023 Census. The 2025 estimate suggests growth has resumed.

One in four residents is 65 or older

Half the population is 30 to 64. Under-30s make up about a quarter, which matters for hiring seasonal staff locally.

Most residents live in the western settlements near the Matiatia ferry. The rural east covers most of the land but has the fewest people.
